Business and family correspondence, diaries, and legal and financial records created for or by members of the Tolles family of the Terryville section of Plymouth, Connecticut. The earliest papers belong to Lamberton Sr., Lyman, Lazarus and Lamberton Tolles, Jr. and consist primarily of deeds and records from settling various estates. This same type of material appears in nearly every family member's papers. Also among Lamberton Jr.'s papers are contracts and accounts relating to his occupation as a carpenter. Marzenas Tolles was captain of the local militia and farmed the family homestead. He kept diaries from 1851-1861. Burritt Holt Tolles also kept diaries both as a young student and then as a soldier with Company D, 19th Regiment of Connecticut Volunteers during the Civil War. Nearly every member of the family wrote to him, many expressing their opinions about the war, and their letters remain with their individual papers. Burritt's brother-in-law Alonzo Smith also served during the war and wrote to his new family even after the death of his wife. Other diarists in the family include Harvey W. Bassett, Walter F. Tolles, and his sons Burritt Harvey Tolles and Russell C. Tolles, most of whom were farmers. Among Walter F. Tolles' papers are courtship letters to his future wife Delia Bassett. Sarah Tolles Plumb, Burritt Holt's sister, married a physician and eventually moved to Ohio.
